It is nice to know that one of our possible leading contenders fears us already. The Swindon Chairman gave an interesting insight into his thoughts when speaking to the Swindon Advertiser.
Last season despite amassing a total of 82 points Swindon could only finish fifth in the league. The top three teams all managed to reach a higher points total than that of normal years.
Peterborough, Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday all drop into League One from above, while Notts County, Bournemouth, Rochdale and Dagenham & Redbridge have come up into it, and Fitton believes it will be less competitive around the top end of the division.
Whether his reasoning contains a little biase or even hope we will have to wait and see. I reckon it could be another season where a high points total will be needed to succeed.
The Chairman added,”I think it will be slightly easier and I`m less concerned than I was last year, if I`m honest.’
“We have got rid of two of the toughest teams in Norwich and Leeds, and I don`t see what is coming to replace them.’
He continued by discussing the various teams he felt either would or would not be in the mix. “Southampton will be tough, but there are some teams who people expect to be up there who won`t be.’
I think all teams we face will be expecting a tough ride this coming season, so that does not surprise me at all.
Huddersfield he does not seem bothered by, nor does he seem to be overly concerned with Brighton. Both have new found money, but he is not convinced.
Myself I have seen Huddersfield strengthening with two what look like good buys. I fancy they will be one of our leading contenders.
Continuing with his analysis he added, “Sheffield Wednesday could go either way. Plymouth? I don`t think so, as they have some rebuilding to do.’
“And the clubs coming up from League Two won`t go straight through. I see it as a slightly easier league next year.
In conclusion the Chairman felt that last season was an unusual season as their were so many teams in the hunt for automatic poromotion.
Next season he feels that the number of points required will be less. His reasoning being, that with less teams fighting for the automatic promotion places, the points totals will be lower.
I myself hope that he is correct in his assumptions. Whilst we still await our first confirmed signing, I still firmly believe that we will do really well next season.
