The 28-year-old former Chelsea defender was certainly well travelled during his career at Stamford Bridge, taking in loan spells with Bournemouth, Oldham, Norwich, Reading, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa before he finally arrived with us and having impressed in his spell back in 2014/15 we turned the deal permanent in the January of that year.
For the return of a reported £10million transfer fee, he’s now notched up 119 starting appearances with a single showing from the bench and he’s even chipped in with four goals in his time with us along with a couple of assists.
2017/18 wasn’t a great year for him, but that goes for plenty at the club and he lost out on his England spot for the Russia World Cup but plenty expect him to bounce back with a vengeance this year.
I’ll ignore what I’ll call valid criticisms from social media here and just focus on the positive reactions the clubs’ tweet received.
Love him. Proud to have as a saint. Every time I have spoken to him, he has always spoken like he is proud to be here too. Big love Berty. ????

Feels much longer. One of our best players and should’ve gone to Russia.
