Southampton’s Lloyd James has withdrawn from Brian Flynn’s Welsh Under 21 squad for Tuesday night’s game with Northern Ireland.

The 20-year-old was set to join up with the rest of the squad ahead of the game, but he reported his injury to the Saints’ physio this morning.

Although the injury isn’t considered serious, necessary precautions have been taken to make sure that the injury doesn’t worsen.

With that in mind, Saints contacted the Welsh FA where they advised them to allow James to remain in Southampton to make a full recovery.

Despite the injury, Saints are optimistic that James will be fit for Saturday’s clash with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

  • To be honest, whilst it’s always good to see our youngsters being recognised at international level, I’d rather James made sure he was fully fit for us. With no other options at right-back, we rely quite heavily on Lloyd and so we need him to be 100% for us, especially given our current predicament.

  • Yeah, I feel sorry for the bloke. Despite many saints fans thinking that he isn’t good enough etc. .. he is always there week in week out, playing in a position that he doesn’t like and has never played in. So fair play to him, at the end of the day – we need him more than he needs us…

  • Lloyd James? performances at right back have been one of Saints biggest weaknesses this season. It?s not his fault, he isnt even a full back. Lets hope that this inury scare is a kick up the boards bum to get into the loan market and give this guy a break.
