Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed that Shane Long is a major doubt for the FA Cup clash against West Bromwich Albion this weekend as he’s picked up a hamstring injury.

Heading to The Hawthorns this weekend for the fifth round affair, Pellegrino confirmed the Long would likely miss out on a return to his former club but he would be assessed late on just in case he does return to contention.

Speaking to saintsfc as he met with the media today to discuss the upcoming game, the Argentine explained that added to Charlie Austin, he was the only injury doubt.

‘Maybe Shane will have problems to be ready for this game. It’s his hamstring, it’s a little bit tight, but we will decide on Friday. Shane and Charlie are the only two players who are outside of the group right now.’

Pellegrino confirmed that just like earlier rounds he would be selecting a strong side for the match as he does want to progress and get a win under our belts for confidence purposes, but there would be one or two changes to give others an opportunity.

‘We have an amazing opportunity in the FA Cup to move forward. We want to use this competition for many reasons, to try to put some players who didn’t play too much, to try to improve as a team, and also because we want to go forward.’

‘I will prepare the game to try to win. If I give the opportunity to somebody it is because I feel that he is really well prepared and deserves to be there on the pitch. I will not give anything for free. I want to put out the players who I feel will represent our club in the best way.’
