It’s not often Southampton find themselves going toe-to-toe with Premier League champions, but they certainly did in the 1994/95 season

The Saints hosted Blackburn in the opening day of the Premier League campaign the season Kenny Dalgleish’s Rovers side would go all the way to the league title, with the likes of Alan Shearer, a former Southampton player, and Chris Sutton all featuring against the south coast side.
The game would turn out to be one of the few times that season that Blackburn would drop points, with Matt Le Tissier’s incredible assist finding Nicholas Banger in the first-half to give Southampton the lead, though Shearer would level the scoring 45 minutes later with the first of his 34 league goals that year as stats from the Premier League’s official website show.
Here’s what some Southampton fans had to say about the throwback draw against Blackburn Rovers, with most fans praising Le Tissier’s assist…
Love this so much.

That pass by @mattletiss7 is one of my most memorable moments of his. Everytime non-saints talk to me about him I tell them about those things that you don’t see@on highlights shows. https://t.co/6upTnDk1o9

Some fans, though, think if VAR was around in 1994, Shearer’s goal would be disallowed for handball…
Shearer’s goal would’ve been disallowed in VAR world

Can we check VAR for @alanshearer‘s possible hand ball?

Blackburn would go on to win the league that season by just one point, beating Sir Alex Fergurson’s Manchester United side to the title.
