Match Stats: Southampton v Bournemouth

Southampton boosted our survival hopes this season with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth earlier today.

Hosting Eddie Howe’s side at St Mary’s Stadium for the Premier League affair, Dusan Tadic scored twice on the day to give us all three points and move the club to within a point of safety with three games remaining in the season.

With a better goal difference than those immediately above us, a late escape from the drop is now definitely on, especially with us still to face Swansea City in our run in.

They also have to face Bournemouth and Stoke City so Mark Hughes is beginning to take it down to the line which is the best anybody could’ve hoped for when he arrived as Mauricio Pellegrino’s replacement.

At the time of typing Swansea are losing to Chelsea in the evening’s kick-off so that would be a perfect result from our point of view to make the weekend even more pleasurable.

The game was, of course, Hughes first win since he came in through the door. It was also our first home win since victory over Everton last November.

Speaking to the BBC Hughes explained.

“Everyone knew the circumstance, we needed a win and draw or a loss wouldn’t do. This is only a part of what we need to do, but good for us. I thought we were good value for the lead, then we conceded from a set piece. Worry sets in about how the guys react, we have been damaged by previous results, but to a man they all stepped up, dug in, got back in the lead. It is a huge result for us, doesn’t mean anything yet but potentially significant.”
