Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has dedicated the FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic to the fans.

Heading to the DW Stadium for the tie and taking a two nil victory with Hojbjerg opening the scoring before Cedric added a second in full time stoppage time, speaking to saintsfc following the full time whistle, the Danish player spoke of his delight at being able to give the fans something to celebrate after recent disappointments.

‘It`s a great achievement and I think we`re really happy for the club and the new coach and most importantly the fans. We have given them a good experience after what happened last week. We can take a lot from the game and I am happy that we could give the fans something to smile about.’

With Southampton now entering the March international break, Hojbjerg knew that going into the football lull on the back of a victory should help everybody when it comes to boosting confidence as players adjust to life under new manager Mark Hughes.

‘The world went down last week and now today we are in the semi-final of the FA Cup and that is football. This win does not change our standing in the league but let`s just focus on today and smile about the result here. You always want to hit back even harder after a defeat and we did that today. Great credit to Wigan, they didn`t come so far for nothing. They are a great side and they have some quality. To match a team like this you have to battle. To play a team high on confidence in these conditions, in their stadium, after knocking out three Premier League teams, it is not an easy task.’

He also had praise for our new gaffer.

‘The coach said before the game today the key would be mentality, desire and hard work because he knew that we had the quality. I think I speak on everyone`s behalf when I say it has been positive. It is a new impulse, new energy, good vibes, a fresh start. He worked a lot on intensity and discipline, and the desire to go the extra yards as individuals and as a team. We have some really good players and maybe this is the perfect fit, nothing is perfect in this world but it`s a good start, let me just say that.’
