Former Reading captain Graeme Murty has been offered a trial by Southampton after being released by the Royals.

Murty, 34, left the Madejski Stadium at the end of last season after Reading did not renew the full back’s contract.

The Englishman spent 11 years with the Berkshire club but after a brief spell with Charlton Athletic broke down, Murty is ready to put his head down and play somewhere else.

Saints boss Mark Wotte will now assess Murty in training and will decide if the ex-Reading man will be a part of his plans for next season.

‘Graeme is a very experienced defender and we will be taking a look at him over the next week or so,’ Wotte told the club’s official website.

‘It is important that we do not lose any more time in our preparations for the new season and taking players on trial is an important part of that process.’
