Striker Rickie Lambert has described our victory over Newcastle United last weekend as Southampton’s best win of the current campaign.

Speaking to saintsfc following the four nil victory on Saturday, the England World Cup hopeful said.

‘I think that’s probably our best performance of the season. I can’t stop smiling – everything went right. To a man, we were superb. It’s a full credit to everyone because it was a great performance.’

The victory was our biggest in the top flight since January 2003, and it was well earned and well deserved and Lambert had praise for everyone from goalkeeper Artur Boruc forward.

‘Everyone was on it. We know that we’re capable of that because we see it every day in training. We know what kind of players we’ve got and it’s a pleasure to play with them. It’s good to get the rewards with days like that, and full credit to the fans – they were singing all through the game, it was a good day.’

Following on from the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur Lambert added that he didn’t really feel there was much between the two performances really, it’s just it really went for us against Newcastle and the chances went in, but that pleases the players as well because of the consistency elements across the performances, but it does make the defeat that bit harder to take because it proves it could’ve gone differently, so at least they can be happy with the fact they bounced back.

‘At first we were a little bit panicky because we had clear chances that we didn’t take, so we were a bit worried but I knew we were going to get on and, when we got it, we could calm down a little bit and play our football. What a performance from the boys.’
