With the transfer window open he has the chance to bring in some back-up to the squad. Hopefully players that will improve the quality that we have currently.

On Saturday we saw Academy youngster James Ward-Prowse play and score his first goal for the first team. Sam Hoskins, Ben Reeves, Ryan Doble and Jack Stevens all played and showed that they could make the grade for us. All except Stevens have come through the ranks at St Mary’s.

Nigel Adkins has stated quite openly that he is looking to strengthen the squad this month, and the main problem I see is deciding where he needs to do so as we push for the Premiership. He has often spoken about the strength that our squad possesses in team building and camaraderie. If he brings in too many players will we lose the teamwork ethic that we currently retain.

Southampton has become well known for the quality produced through our Academy, with the likes of Walcott, Bale and Oxlade-Chamberlain three recent starlets to make the grade. If the youngsters are to get the chances to make the grade, bringing in a lot of players could damage their prospects.

With Saints still top of the Championship, Nigel knows that bringing in some quality, where it is required, could help push us over the finishing’t envy Nigel the decision making. With the team hitting a brick wall and stumbling on with a run of poor results, I don’t envy Nigel the task of making the right calls.

I do trust him to make the choices necessary and give the team a lift.
