On loan from Liverpool Danny Guthrie decided to join Southampton so he could get experience from first team football and so he could play in a good side.

Danny Guthrie told the Echo: ‘There was lot’s of competition at Liverpool, especially in midfield.

‘Getting into the centre was a bit of a task with the likes of Gerrard and Alonso, but you can only try.

‘You learn so much training with those guys every day and they’re good guys as well. It’s put me in good stead for the future.

‘I wouldn’t want to go to a team where there’s no football. That wouldn’t suit me.

‘I want to show what my qualities are and so I’ve come to Southampton.

‘They’re a good team and that’s what I want, what I need.’

  • If he wanted to join a really good side he could have come to Pompey – but there again he wouldn’t get a game for us, more like the reserves, you know much like your first team.
