In the long and established history of English football, only few goalkeepers can hold a candle to what Peter Shilton achieved in his incredible career.

The former Italia 90 shot-stopper turned 70 this week, and Southampton marked the occasion with a happy birthday post on their social media accounts for Shilton, who made well over 1,000 professional appearances in his 30-year-long footballing career as numbers from Soccer Base show

As expected, some Southampton fans on Twitter praised their former keeper, and here is what some had to say…

Shilton played over 200 times for the Saints from 1982 to 1987 after a successful spell with Nottingham Forest where the record-England appearance maker won the European Cup twice with Brian Clough.
