Opinion: Southampton’s season can really begin with weekend win

|

The last week has seen Southampton secure two very good results away at Brighton and away at Fulham. The first of those was a Premier League clash as they got their first points on the board, before advancing into the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup by beating Fulham on Tuesday evening.

However, with the Saints in the relegation zone after three Premier League clashes, the fans could have their season really kick-started with a win this weekend, as they host Manchester United live on BT Sport in the first game of the Premier League weekend.

There very rarely comes a good time to face Manchester United, but if there ever was one then it’s now. The Saints haven’t conceded in two games and have won both, whilst United are fresh off the back of a loss and a draw, missing two penalties in the process against Wolves and Crystal Palace.

Ralph Hasenhuttl will have to fancy his chances, although he will be going into the game without Nathan Redmond, who he confirmed was out on Southampton’s Twitter account after an ankle injury against Fulham.

The last time that Southampton welcomed Manchester United to St, Mary’s they came away with a point, however, they also surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 against what was then Jose Mourinho’s Man United. For the club’s last win over the 20-time English champions, you have to look back to over three years ago in January 2016 when the Saints won 1-0 at Old Trafford, via 11v11.

This time is different, though, United have just one win to their name, an opening day mauling of Chelsea, and with the season still in it’s very early stages, getting three points against a top-six side would be a great early boost for the South coast side, and Hasenhuttl could deliver it if his side play like they did against Brighton and Fulham.
