Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted disappointment following our opening day draw against Swansea City.

Hosting Paul Clement’s side at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday for the 2017/18 Premier League opener, Saints battled to a scoreless draw on the day in Pellegrino’s first competitive match and although we largely dominated the game, we just couldn’t find our way through their backline.

Speaking to saintsfc as he met with the media following the game, our new gaffer explained.

‘I’m a little bit disappointed, because we did everything to win the game. We couldn’t, because football is like this – sometimes with a couple of chances you can score, but today we couldn’t. As a manager, you can work on the way to create chances, on the way to control the game, but to have the courage to score goals is something that is difficult. I think we had 29 shots and just two on target.’

He went on to say that he would expect improvement in the coming weeks though as we’re still a work in progress when it comes to his ideas, but he did feel there were positives from the game as well.

‘It’s something that we have to continue working on, and keep going, but in parallel I am really happy with the performance. As a first game I think the level of the team was really high.’

He ended by saying.

‘Two or three players have been with us for only two or three weeks maximum and it’s not enough in this level, but they showed compromise, they showed commitment and especially they were really focused, controlling the opponent, because they were waiting to do some counter attacks and play long balls and, generally, I think we did a nice game. The only thing we are a little bit disappointed about is that we couldn’t score.’

Dusan Tadic was also frustrated following the game and in his own post game interviews he said.

‘We expect to win this game and when you watch everything I think we deserved to score goals but we missed a lot of chances. If you score an open goal, it would have been easier and it is a totally different game. But we need to keep going and the next game is against West Ham, where we will try to win. There is a lot of positive things, we just missed scoring a goal from our chances.’
