Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has described Southampton as being the better and more dominant side following defeat to Stoke City on Saturday.

Heading to the Bet365 Stadium for the tie, Stoke took a two one victory on the day with Maya Yoshida’s 75th minute effort not being enough to salvage a point as Peter Crouch hit back late on.

On a stats front Pellegrino has a point, especially the second half display, as we dominated 70% of the possession and did have 21 chances in total across the game, but only three of those were on target with Stoke testing Fraser Forster double that – with our stopper also saving a penalty.

Speaking to saintsfc as he met with the media following the game, the gaffer explained.

‘We dominated them. We didn`t create much, but we always controlled the ball and never gave them the possibility to control the game. We conceded a couple of chances on the counter-attack, because Shaqiri is a clever player who was always looking for spaces behind our midfielders, but in the second half we were much better.’

Pellegrino went on to say.

‘We conceded from a corner and then we scored from a corner, but we also created a couple of chances in the first half that were clearer than the ones in the second half. We drew level in the game when we were much better than them, but then we concede the winning goal. We are disappointed because I think we played a really good game, putting them under pressure even from the beginning.’

The gaffer also thanked the fans for their support once again on the day as over 2,000 made the trip.

‘We have to be grateful to them. They were always getting behind the team, pushing us and giving us the strength and energy to score. We have to come home with no points, but in the next few games, playing with this spirit and character, I think we will improve. We have to keep going.’
