Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that Southampton were the masters of their own downfall in the three two loss to Tottenham Hotspur today.

Southampton took a good two goal lead inside of the first half hour, but Spurs got themselves a second wind a few minutes after Lallana’s strike built on JayRod’s opener, and then got themselves back on level terms within a minute of the half time restart.

They then decided the points at the death with the third goal.

Speaking to saintsfc following the match, Pochettino explained that he felt it was more a case of us losing the game than it was Spurs winning it because of how it played out.

‘In the first half, we were dominating and went 2-0 up. I thought we were completely managing the game. The goal to make it two all changed the game. We suffered after conceding that second goal and then the last goal made it very difficult.’

With that said the gaffer wasn’t going to overly criticise the players because we did end the match with four youngsters gaining valuable experience, and with Spurs’ spending of late he says they are well equipped for the Premiership whereas Southampton are still a long term project with young players.

‘Despite that I thought it was an even sided game, but overall we are disappointed with the result.’

Midfielder Jack Cork agreed that we were very unlucky not to have at least taken a point from our efforts on the day, and having been two nil up he says all of the players are gutted to have let that slip but you do get punished for mistakes in this league and it has to be a lesson for all of them that even at two nil games aren’t over. It’s something we should’ve learnt already to be fair following other games this season.

For Cork, it’s now about bouncing back in the game against Newcastle as our aim remains to finish above them this season.
