Manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he feels Southampton were very unlucky to lose the game against Aston Villa last night, but he wasn’t pleased with how we defended on the night.

Speaking to saintsfc following the three two loss and our first home defeat of the season, Pochettino admitted that it was slightly concerning to see us concede three goals again especially as we bossed the match.

‘Overall our possession was good and we managed many phases of the game, but we also made some errors at the back and were not as solid as usual. We have been very solid so far this season, but that was not the case.’

Pochettino adds that we can feel very unlucky following the game because they had three shots on target and scored with each of them, whereas we created 21 chances over the 90 minutes.

‘We were heavily punished for that. It seemed like we had the game controlled, but when they scored that third goal from outside the box it was all over from that point.’

The gaffer ends by saying that he couldn’t fault our efforts in the game really, but it was just one of those nights where we didn’t get the luck or the rub of the green.

It’s also now worrying that we have back to back defeats and we need to address that in our next match out, and that won’t be easy as we’ll be facing Manchester City this weekend, so it’ll be another tough game but we’ll have to hope the breaks go for us and not against us this time round.

Despite the defeats though, we are still playing well so we just have to keep doing what we are doing and make that bit of improvement again.
