Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that Southampton basically lost the game against Cardiff City, he doesn’t believe they won it.

Speaking to saintsfc following the game Pochettino was angry at the fact that we just weren’t clinical enough nor aggressive enough in the match to really make our possession and chances count.

‘It was a game that we pretty much lost – they didn’t really win it. We created plenty of chances but weren’t able to finalise them, and the one chance they had on goal they scored from. We are quite disappointed with the final result.’

Poch goes on to say that having lots of possession in a match doesn’t count for much when you don’t make use of it and ultimately that was the story of the day for us.

‘I felt that we were not aggressive enough attacking wise, we were moving forward and creating chances but we just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal. When that happens in football you get punished and that is what happened to us.’

With that said, the gaffer also admitted that it was difficult to be disappointed or angry with the players themselves because he knows they didn’t underperform or perform badly on the day, we stuck to the game plan, we played our game as we have done all season long but over that 90 minutes it was one of those days where the final bit was missing but it wasn’t through lack of effort.

Also pointing to the injuries that we have had and the players we were missing, and although he knows that’s not an excuse, he knows things like this do take their toll over the course of a season but it’s something we have to deal with better effectively as we continue to grow as a side.
