With news the other day that Sofiane Boufal had been sent back to Staplewood by Moroccan officials after his picked up an unspecified injury, manager Claude Puel has now confirmed his return.

The summer signing had been named in Morocco’s final 23 man squad for their African Cup of Nations tournament which begins on January 14 and he was expected to be out of contention for us for around the four to six weeks mark, but having arrived at the club and worked hard on his fitness to play a part in recent times, Puel told saintsfc in his pre Liverpool press conference that he had picked up a knee injury and would now stay with us for the tournament instead.

‘Sofiane Boufal has a knee injury, and he cannot go to the Africa Cup. He will stay with us to recover.’

With no details given when Morocco confirmed his return and withdrawal from the squad, Puel explained that it wasn’t too serious but would likely keep him sidelined for around three weeks.

‘I hope he can come back in three weeks. It`s not a serious injury, it`s inflammation of his knee, but he cannot play and he cannot play for his country. It`s just an inflammation. It`s not a bad injury, but it`s important to be careful about this injury.’

Adding.

‘It`s a good thing he can stay quiet, because I think he is an important player, who can make the difference with his quality.’
