Gaston Ramirez has brought the curtain down on his time at St Mary’s by signing a loan spell with Championship side Middlesbrough until the end of the season.

The Uruguayan joins the promotion hopefuls until the summer where his contract with Southampton naturally comes to an end.

With high hopes for the now 25 year old when he joined from Bologna for £12million back in the August transfer window of 2012, he leaves having only made 28 starts for the club, with a further 27 from the bench and in that time returning eight goals which isn’t bad really.

He spent the majority of last year with Hull City on a season long loan as he wasn’t in Ronald Koeman’s plans, and this year he has only made five appearances for the club.

Koeman had made it clear he would be one player going out this window to get himself back on track, and Executive Director of Football Les Reed commented to saintsfc about the move.

‘We would like to wish Gastón all the best at Middlesbrough and with the opportunity to play regular first-team football for a club that is pushing for promotion to the Premier League.’

Shame it didn’t work out, but sometimes they don’t and at least he didn’t prove as troublesome as a certain other big money signing.
