Report: £9m-rated Premier League benchwarmer with 3 appearances to snub Southampton in January

|

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker-Peters has reportedly declined a January loan move to Southampton in the New Year.

According to The Sunday Mirror via The Boot Room, the 22-year-old right-back had garnered interest from the Saints as well as Crystal Palace heading into the January transfer window, however, the appointment of Jose Mourinho at Spurs has put a massive dent in the Premier League duo attempting to sign the right-back.

Will Hasenhuttl go big on January signings?

Yes

No

The England youth international, who has only made three Premier League appearances this season as stats from Transfermarkt show, is reportedly keen to remain with the north London club and fight for his place this season after being the second-choice right-back for most of the season.

With a Transfermarkt valuation £9m, Walker-Peters could have been a welcome addition to the Southampton side for the second half of the Premier League season with the Saints gearing up to fight for survival after 13 games in the English top-flight.

Despite an emphatic performance over the weekend against Arsenal where an Alexandre Lacazette equaliser late on denied the Saints the three points, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side still sits in the Premier League relegation zone, and a right-back is reportedly what the Austrian manager wants in January.

The Mirror reported earlier this month via HITC that Hasenhuttl is on the lookout for a new right-sided fullback with Yan Valery yet to maintain his starting XI spot from last season and OneFootball reporting that Cedric Soares could be cashed in on this January.

Walker-Peters would have been an ideal short-term fix at right-back despite his limited game time this season, though, with the 22-year-old defender showing for Spurs in recent years that he is capable of performing in the English top-flight as shown in his MOTM performance on his Premier League debut as well as his three-assist game against Bournemouth last season.

The Tottenham youngster could have been the perfect solution to Hasenhuttl’s right-back needs, but now the Austrian must look elsewhere to fix his leaky defence in January.
