According to a report this week, Southampton have now joined the race for Brazilian midfielder Thiago Mendes.

The 27-year-old currently plys his trade for French Ligue 1 side Lille and although predominantly a defensive midfielder, he can also operate at right back so might be seen by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl as potential cover for Yann Valery.

According to Whoscored he made 37 appearances for Lille in the campaign of 2018/19, contributing five assists and outlet La Voix du Nord (via Sport Witness) have us linked alongside Everton, Lyon and an unnamed Serie A side for his services this summer.

In fairness, I know nothing about the player but from a quick search he doesn’t seem to tick the boxes that Hasenhuttl’s own words (as above) would require when it comes to our summer dealings this window, so I’d be surprised if anything actually came of this – especially at a reported 25million Euro fee as suggested.
