Southampton fans with long memories will remember that over the summer, the club were pretty heavily linked with a move for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The original reports from French outlet L’Equipe suggested that the Bundesliga side were holding out for between the 35-40million Euro mark, despite only paying a reported fee of 10million Euros to Lyon the previous summer and naturally, for a 22-year-old with limited experience, we baulked at that fee and simply moved on.
It was suggested at the time that we had made a firm offer of around the 25-30million Euro mark, but that was obviously rejected.
According to outlet Sport Bild via Sport Witness we have again made contact with the Frenchman agent, Pierre-Henri Bovis, over whether a deal could be done in January as it’s now believed that Mainz would only be demanding 30million Euros.
It still seems a princely sum for a player who is yet to make an appearance this season having undergone surgery on his meniscus, but in his debut season last term, he did contribute 14 goals.
I guess we’ll hear more about him as January nears.
