Southampton have been linked with having an interest in Brentford starlet Ollie Watkins ahead of the Premier League campaign of 2019/20, but if the report is true, we do face competition for his services from the likes of Crystal Palace and newly promoted Sheffield United.
The 23-year-old talent made his name at Exeter City and he had a good goalscoring record in League Two. Obviously there was a drop off as he made the step up to the Championship, but in his time at Griffin Park he’s made 79 starts (14 substitute showings) and he’s returned 23 goals, but 12 of those goals came last season (as did six assists) as he continued to impress.
Given the development potential here, it’s also worth noting that as well as being capable of playing through the middle, he’s also done a job in all midfield positions as well as on both wings, so his versatility is a major plus here.
The original report seems to stem from Sky Sports and although real details are thin on the ground, we were loosely linked with some interest back in January, so there might be something in this one.
