Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has hinted that he could be leaving the club in the future to pursue his personal ambitions.

The 24-year-old arrived at the club from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in 2016 for £12.8m and has cemented his place in the Saints’ squad.

Since then, his signing was considered to be a steal given how highly rated he had been with the Bavaria based-outfit in Germany and is now getting the opportunity to shine on the biggest stage under Ralph Hasenhuttl’s watch, having been handed the captain’s armband.

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn heaped praise on him and described the Danish work horse as one of the “older heads” and a “great leader”.

From 129 appearances for the Saints, the Denmark international has just five goals and six assists but it’s his work in the middle and defensively that has been the most impressive part of his game, averaging 2.4 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 56 passes and a success rate of 77.2%.

However, speaking to Sport 1, Hojbjerg suggested that Southampton may not be the final club that he plays for in his career and was honest about what he aspires to do in the game.

Will Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leave Southampton?

No

No

“I know what I want, the club knows it too,” he said. “I want to play at an even higher level than I am currently. The relationship between Southampton and me is fantastic.

“The club gave me the platform to grow. I’m not saying ‘Goodbye’ and I’m focused on my club, but my goal is very clear: I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

It’s fair to say that we may not be able to provide him with the platform required to win the trophies that he wants to win, and the “selling club” tagline will begin to stick once the mud is thrown.
As a supporter, it is one of the most frustrating elements of the game to continuously lose your best players to bigger clubs. Hojbjerg has been different class for us and there is no surprise that he has been linked with a move away in recent months.
As far as Southampton are concerned, Hojbjerg is required for us to move forward and challenge for those European places. If he leaves, we could be back to square one.
