Southampton are one of two clubs that are interested in signing Brentford forward Ollie Watkins, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The 24-year-old has been scintillating form for his club during the current Championship campaign as the Bees continue to challenge for a top-two spot in England’s second-tier division.

From 41 starts this season, Watkins has scored 23 times and provided three assists (as per Whoscored), with Thomas Frank’s side currently in third place with five games still to play.

With Danny Ings the outstanding player in finding the net for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this season, a move for Watkins would certainly make sense.

With 18 goals in 27 starts, he is way out ahead of James Ward-Prowse who has just five goals and Che Adams who has only scored once since his £15m move from Birmingham City last summer.

Undoubtedly, the Saints would not mind having a slice of that pie, but Ornstein revealed that Crystal Palace are also interested in his services.

However, this could depend on where Brentford finish in the Championship table. It would look more likely that Watkins could make the move if they fail to reach the Premier League this season.

The question is, could Watkins make the step up to top-flight football? We believe so. The Englishman has already illustrated that he can dominate defensive lines and adjust to the central role in the Bees’ team.

This one may have to be monitored closely. If Brentford miss out, expect more clubs to make their respective enquiries.
