Former Southampton attacker Dusan Tadic has admitted that he had plenty of chances to leave the club during his four years on the south coast and that he is grateful for the time he spent with the Saints.

Speaking to The Guardian before Ajax were eliminated from their Champions League group stage a year after the Dutch giants came moments away from progressing to the final, the Serbian international revealed that he believes he was part of the team that represented the best years in the history of the football club.

Signed from FC Twente in 2014, Tadic was part of the Southampton team that were regularly finding themselves finishing inside the top-seven of the Premier League table, resulting in a few European adventures for the Saints in the four years Tadic played for the club before moving to Ajax, the club the attacker had always dreamed of playing for.

Will Adams score a goal this season?

Yes, he just needs a confidence boost

No, he has not proven himself

Tadic said: “I think I deserved to go where I wanted after what I did for the club in four years. Because before I eventually left I had lots of other chances to leave, but then I stayed and also signed a new contract.

The Ajax no. 10 added with: “We were amazing – those were the best years of Southampton’s history. It’s very nice that I’ll be always part of that. I really appreciate that they let me follow my feeling because they probably would have received more money from other clubs.”

Tadic was part of a Southampton side that featured the likes of Champions League winners Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk as well as Tottenham duo Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama, with the squad being managed by former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

With the Saints currently sitting in the relegation zone, it seems like a lifetime ago when the south coast side bolstered a side of this much talent in the Premier League.
