Report: PL giants to make £15m bid for Saints outcast with 3 league starts since infamous result

Leicester City are reportedly plotting a move for Jannik Vestergaard with Brenden Rodgers keen on adding an extra defender to his ranks as the Foxes push for Champions League qualification.

According to The Sun, the 2015/16 Premier League champions are to bid £15m for the Danish centre-back who has hardly featured for Southampton ever since their infamous 9-0 defeat to Leicester in late October, with stats from Transfermarkt showing the 27-year-old defender has only made three Premier League starts since that fateful night.

Vestergaard has also been linked with a move away from St. Mary’s over the past few weeks, with Sky Sports News reporting that former club Werder Bremen wanted to re-sign the towering centre-back this January, however, a move broke down as reported by Kicker via Read Southampton.

Is the defence the number one area Ralph must improve this window?

Yes, we leak in too many goals

No, things are starting to turn around for us

With the former Borussia Monchengladbach clearly out of favour with Ralph Hasenhuttl and only being called back into the first-team this week against Crystal Palace due to injury to Jan Bednarek, with Vestergaard almost gifting the Eagles a goal in the first half, it seems like the Saints could be open to selling the Dane should Leicester bid for the defender.

It’s no secret that Southampton perform better with the Danish centre-back out of the starting XI, with the Saints enduring their best run of form in the Premier League this season with Vestergaard uninvolved in games which have seen Hasenhuttl’s side climb out of relegation zone and now dreaming of a Europa League finish, and selling the 27-year-old defender could be great business.

Vestergaard’s absence in the Southampton first-team has proven to be no great loss for the Saints, and moving the Danish international on for a decent fee could be a smart deal from Hasenhuttl, who could use the funds to re-invest into a defender that suits his system better.
