Report: Saints eye January move for rock who commands third-best defence in top European league

|

Southampton are reportedly interested in 25-year-old Portuguese defender Artur Jorge as a potential defensive signing in the January transfer window.

According to A Bola via Sport Witness, the Saints are keen on improving their leaky defence after conceding the most goals out of any Premier League side so far this season, and that Jorge could be a potential fix for the south coast side.

Will Southampton claim Premier League survival?

Yes

No

Whilst Jorge’s side, Vitoria Setubal, sit 12th in the Primeira Liga standings, the Portuguese team have been an outstanding side defensively this season, with the league table showing that only European giants Benfica and Porto have conceded more goals in the division.

And Jorge has been at the heart of this impressive defensive record, with the former Braga centre-back playing every minute of league football for Vitoria Setubal as stats from Transfermarkt show as well as stats from WhoScored showing that the 25-year-old defender manages, on average, the most clearances out of any player in the Portuguese top-flight.

With the report going on to say that Southampton are confident in securing a deal for Jorge for as little as €1.5m (£1.33m), the Portuguese defender could seemingly be an ideal winter signing for the Saints.

As the Premier League table shows, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have been nothing short of a defensive mess this season, conceding the most goals out of any side in the English top-flight and only managing two clean sheets in the division after 12 games.

Defensive reinforcements are a must for Southampton in the January transfer window, and Jorge’s achievements this season with Vitoria Setubal are impressive enough that the Portuguese defender could be a significant improvement over what the Saints are currently working with.
