Report: Saints midfielder opens up about move from title-winners to a ‘very challenging league’

|

Stuart Armstrong has recently opened up about his move to Southampton from Celtic after over a year with the Premier League side.

Speaking to The Scotsman, the 27-year-old midfielder discussed how he has managed to cope with the jump in quality between the Scottish Premiership and the English top-flight as well as the challenges Armstrong has faced since moving south of the border.

Will Southampton claim Premier League survival?

Yes

No

The Scottish international joined Southampton in the summer of 2018 from the SPL Champions for a reported fee of £7m according to BBC Sport, where the midfielder has enjoyed mixed success with the south coast side as stats from Transfermarkt show, with Armstrong scoring four goals and assisting two in all competitions for the Saints.

The 27-year-old midfielder said about the adjustment to playing for Southampton: “It’s been an interesting journey for me so far, not always smooth. It’s been up and down, as it always has in my career,” with Armstrong later adding: “The Premier League is a very challenging league but a great experience. Every week you come up against different qualities, fantastic players.”

And Armstrong’s Premier League career seemingly matches with his ‘up and down’ take on his footballing life so far, with the Scottish international scoring just three goals in the English top-flight as well as starting just 18 games in the Premier League over the past two seasons as stats from Transfermarkt show.

Indeed, Southampton’s form has been nothing short of poor this season with the Saints currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table, and Armstrong’s comments about the division being challenging a year after joining the club could seemingly indicate that the Scottish midfielder isn’t quite ready yet to play up to the standard of the English top-flight.
