Report: Saints prospect believes this ‘massive opportunity’ will be a ‘big step’ in his career
Kayne Ramsay has voiced his belief that he made the right decision to go out on loan for the remainder of the season after joining Shrewsbury Town in January.
Speaking to The Shropshire Star, the 19-year-old defender revealed that it was a good opportunity for him to go out on loan for the second half of the campaign, with Ramsay being inspired by the likes of fellow academy graduates Michael Obafemi and Yan Valery to go out and play regular first-team football.
And Ramsay has been quick to make an impact at his new club, with the 19-year-old defender making a crucial tackle in the first half to deny MK Dons a second goal in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with the League One side, and the teenager believes that he could be handed more chances at Southampton next season if he impresses at Shrewsbury.

The Saints teenager said: “He’s (Hasenhuttl) played seven or eight (young players). Yan Valery has played about 35 games in the Premier League already. He’s done extremely well. Michael Obafemi as well. It’s the same thing. Yan came from France but Michael came from Leyton Orient and has just kicked on,” with Ramsay later adding: “I see this as a massive opportunity. The way we play suits me. I like the message he (Ricketts) tries to send and the way he wants me to play will help me more in my career. It’s a big step for me.”
As stats from Transfermarkt show, Ramsay has already been handed a few first-team chances with Southampton since becoming a first-team player, with the academy prospect playing 90 minutes against Manchester City in the 2018/2019 season, and this loan move could be the event that kick starts the right-backs development into becoming a member of Hasenhuttl’s squad for next season.
