Report: Southampton eye English midfielder with an eye for goal also being chased by PL rivals

|

Southampton are one of several Premier League clubs interested in Middlesbrough midfielder Lewis Wing, who is enjoying a breakout season with the Championship club.

Team Talk report that the Saints, as well as south coast rival Brighton and Bournemouth, are all showing an interest in the 24-year-old Englishman after establishing himself as a key player for Jonathan Woodgate’s side, with stats from WhoScored showing that Wing has managed 31 appearances in all competitions for Boro, playing over 2,000 minutes in the process.

Wing has also earned a good reputation for himself as a midfielder with a keen eye for goal, with the former Shildon AFC star already bagging six goals this season for Middlesbrough from central midfield, the joint-most for the position in the Championship this campaign as stats from WhoScored show.

With The Telegraph reporting last week that Ralph Hasenhuttl is expected to overhaul the Southampton squad following his penning of a new deal for the club, a deal to bring Wing to St. Mary’s could signal an appearing trend from the Saints in which they poach some of the most promising talents from the Championship and attempt to integrate them into Premier League life.

Last summer saw Southampton spend big on Che Adams as reported by BBC Sport, and although the 23-year-old attacker is yet to find the back of the net as stats from Transfermarkt show, the former Birmingham City star has quickly become a fan favourite and a player who supporters expect to flourish in the future with Hasenhuttl keeping his faith in the youngster.

And Wing could be the next Championship experiment for Hasenhuttl to test should Southampton go in for the 24-year-old, and with the Middlesbrough star finding his niche this season as a goal-scoring midfielder, the player who was playing non-league just two years ago could find his use in a Saints XI in 2020/21.
