Oriol Romeu is inching closer towards an £8.5m move to Celta Vigo with the La Liga side keen on adding midfield reinforcements this month.

The Daily Mail report that the 28-year-old midfielder is in discussions with the Spanish following from a weekend where Romeu was an unused substitute in Southampton’s 3-2 defeat against Wolves.

Mundo Deportivo also back up claims that Romeu could be off this month via Sport Witness, with the Spanish outlet reporting that the former Chelsea midfielder could join Celta ‘immediately’ this week with the Galician club very interested in signing the Southampton man this January.

Romeu has found himself out of favour with Ralph Hasenhuttl in recent weeks, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the Catalan-born midfielder has not started a Premier League game for the Saints since their 1-0 loss to West Ham, a defeat that was followed by a run of four wins in five games for the south coast side.

Is this the most important transfer window in recent years?

Yes, we need fresh faces

No, we've experienced worse

With reports last week from The Galicia Press claiming that Romeu is keen on a move to Celta, a transfer for the Southampton midfielder could be in the works, especially with the 28-year-old Saints man seemingly not part of Hasenhuttl’s long-term plans at the club.

Romeu has been a staple for Southampton since joining from Chelsea in 2015, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the former Barcelona academy player has made 176 appearances for the Saints in his five seasons with the club, and a move to Celta could be viewed as a smart decision by the south coast side.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been a great servant for the club since his arrival five years ago, and with Romeu now out of the first-team picture and a La Liga team keen on acquiring his services, Southampton owe it to themselves to allow a deal to happen to honour a midfielder who has been great for the club over the past few seasons.
