Report: Southampton star admits side ‘have nothing to lose’ against ‘the best team in the world’

Sofiane Boufal has confessed that Southampton have nothing to lose this weekend when the Saints travel up north to face Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Speaking to The Southern Daily Echo, the Moroccan international admitted that Saturday’s fixture against the Reds, who have a 16-point lead over second-place Manchester City in the league table, is a game where Southampton have little to lose given how dominant Liverpool have been this season and how impressive their home record is.

Liverpool remains the only unbeaten side in any of Europe’s top-five leagues and have not lost a league game in over a year as BBC Sport reported, with their last defeat coming against the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, and Boufal is aware of the dangers the Merseyside-based club posses.

Can Southampton start to dream of a European finish?

Yes, we can do it again

Yes, we can do it again

No, our luck will run out

The former Lille star said when asked about this weekend’s game: “We have nothing to lose against Liverpool. It’s a big challenge because they are the best team in the world right now. We have nothing to lose and we will see what we can do there. It will be a very difficult game but will give it our maximum. The team is in a very good moment and we have won a lot of games and are full of confidence. It’s very important we keep this up.”

Although Liverpool have remained undefeated in the league for over a year and are yet to lose a league game at Anfield since April 2017 as reported by One Football, the Saints might be feeling somewhat confident in getting something against the reigning Club World Cup champions.

As form tables from Transfermarkt show, Southampton have been one of the most in-form clubs in the Premier League in recent weeks, and with the Saints claiming impressive results against the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side could have a sneaky feeling of causing one of the upsets of the season when they travel to Anfield this Saturday.
