Southampton midfielder Hojbjerg has pleaded to Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze to move to a Premier League side.

The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the 2019/20 campaign and would become a free agent when he is released by his club.

The Saints captain was teammates with Gotze when they were both playing at Bayern Munich together before the Denmark international made the move to St Mary’s in 2016 for £12.8m.

Speaking to German outlet SPORT1 (cited by the Daily Echo), Hojbjerg wants to see the Germany international move to England if his current deal is not extended.

Mario Gotze at Southampton?

Yes

No

No

“He is a fantastic player”, he said, “he has always worked hard, also in the gym. He’s very disciplined. I can recommend the Premier League to every player because it is the best league in the world.

“I think Mario would love it in England. He is still a world-class player. I am sure that the League would love to have him here.”

Hojbjerg added that if he does make the move to the Premier League, he would not go easy to him and apologised in advance.

Gotze has his name stitched into international folklore. His extra-time goal during the 2014 World Cup Final in Brazil ensured that his country clinched their fourth golden trophy after a 1-0 victory against Argentina.

Although Gotze has not been linked with a move to Southampton, imagine a World Cup winner running around in the famous red and white shirt. He would be the first man since Terry Paine to represent us having won the pinnacle of all international tournaments.

Maybe Ralph Rasenhuttl can work his magic to bring Gotze to the South Coast. I believe he would be an instant hit.
