The reserves argument has rumbled on since Vital Saints covered the initial story a few days ago.
Many football league managers have strongly opposed the suggestions from Mourinho and Benitez on the same grounds that we at Vital Saints did.
But Saints captain Claus Lundekvam has told the Echo that he isn’t totally against it: ‘Our league is ridiculous really with only 14 league games.
‘I understand where managers like Mourinho and Benitez are coming from. Having their reserve teams in the Football League could be a good solution.
‘We had that in Norway with my old club Brann Bergen.
‘I played in their second team, playing in the second division, which we weren’t allowed to get promoted from, before getting into the first team.’
Again although obviously I’m not exactly an expert on Norwegian football, but I’m going to suggest that it doesn’t quite have the 72 team league structure that the football league does. I’m also going to suggest that it doesn’t have the passionate support that our football league teams have and so again the argument that it works in other countries is irrelevant.
