Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has spoken of his delight at seeing Southampton return to scoring ways in the weekend’s clash against West Bromwich Albion and hold out for the victory.

Heading to The Hawthorns for the FA Cup fifth round tie against West Brom, goals from Wesley Hoedt and Dusan Tadic gave us a two goal advantage but Salomon Rondon did make it a one goal game two minutes after Tadic scored.

Despite the home side dominating chances on the day they couldn’t get that second and we went through to the quarter final draw and now face either Wigan Athletic or Manchester City at the next stage of the competition.

Speaking to saintsfc as he met with the media for his post game press conference, the Argentine was pleased with our efforts at both ends of the pitch.

‘We feel happy for many reasons. As a team, the spirit that we showed today was really good from the beginning until the end. West Brom were looking to play long, put us under pressure and make the match into a physical battle but we competed very well especially at set-pieces, even scoring one ourselves. You have to be focused from the beginning and that was one of many small details that made the difference here. Until the end we tried to make them think about our attacking threats – like Manolo and Josh from the bench – instead of us worrying about theirs and a possible equaliser; it nearly paid off because we were unfortunate not to score a third late on.’

With Nathan Redmond returning to the first team, Pellegrino obviously hoped that kind of performance would see improvement in the Premier League campaign.

‘We have moved to the next round which is important but the most pleasing thing for me is the belief in our work and the knowledge that we can compete well in difficult situations. The best thing as always is to look to improve as a team and make sure we take that out onto the pitch. Good results will be the consequences of that. Nathan is looking to rediscover his best level. It will take time for us to get him there again together. It is never easy coming back into the team after a spell out of it but I was impressed with him today, he had some good moments.’

Having got on the scoresheet in the game, Tadic was also in front of the media at the full time whistle and he was delighted with the spirit the side showed across the game.

‘We are very happy because we showed great character to fight against a physical and strong team, especially in the second-half. It was very important to get an early goal. I think from the started we had a control on the game. In the second-half it was a little bit difficult because they played direct and you need to defend against that. We showed we can do that.’

Tadic knew that spirit would be critical in our league battle as the season draws to a close and reflecting on his goal, he added.

‘It was a nice finish but I am more pleased with our team work today. Nathan played a nice ball to Guido who found me and that`s the most important thing. We will have these kind of teams in the rest of the season. Next game we have Burnley who also physical and we need to compete against them. It`s a lot about confidence and I think we are going in the right direction. We will give our best with our fans to go on from this period and win against Burnley.’
