Oriol Romeu and Charlie Austin have both been reflecting on Southampton’s first Premier League win of the new season following victory over West Ham at the weekend.

With goals from Manolo Gabbiadini, Dusan Tadic and Austin himself on the day giving is the three two victory on home soil, Romeu told saintsfc in his own post game press conference that it was vital Southampton got themselves up and running for the year and he felt we’d look back and view the three points as crucial in the coming months.

‘Winning was crucial. Even more after the sending off and putting ourselves 2-0 up, but we struggling to control the game and find the third goal. They came back and put the chances they had away, so we had to react and put all our effort in right until the end.

With West Ham fighting back to tie the scores up despite being down to ten men, Romeu was disappointed with that element of the game, but he took the positive that we still went on to get the third.

‘It`s what we wanted. Creating chances is probably one of the most difficult things in football, but we have been able to do that recently. We haven`t been able to put those away but we did that today and scored three goals. Now we need to make sure we improve defensively before the next one.’

As for Austin, he knew we’d got out of jail with how we lost the two goal lead, so he was naturally delighted to have found the net.

‘It`s great to get the first win of the season and come on and play a part. The lads worked so hard for the result but we threw away a two-goal lead, really. I`ve got to be honest, I think we got out of jail. It`s always tough when you come up against ten men because they have nothing to lose and just go for it, but let`s look at us: we`ve come away with three points and it is a big win for us, really.’

As for his stoppage time winner, he went on to say.

‘Whether it was a penalty or not, I don`t know. I am delighted it went for us but I think if went against us, it`s a harsh one. But that doesn`t matter for us, it`s three points and we move on now to Huddersfield. It was great to be able to get three goals because I think that was what we were lacking a bit at the end of last year. But at the end of the day, the three points is what`s important.’
