Southampton crashed out of the Carling Cup in the 3rd round stage as they lost 3-1 at League Two Rotherham on Tuesday.

The home side took the lead through Nick Fenton (23) when his header looped over Southampton ‘keeper Bartosz Bialkowski. Drew Broughton tried to claim the goal but it was Fenton’s, and Rotherham took the 1-0 lead into the break.

Danny Harrison (56) added a second early in the second half with a fine 30-yard curling effort, but substitute Stern John (61) gave the away side hope as he hit back minutes later. A dangerous ball from Adam Lallana almost allowed John to equalise, but the ball just evaded him. Alex Rhodes then forced a save from Bialkowski but Broughton (69) soon added a third as he tapped into an empty net to secure a win for the League Two side.
