Reports in the national press are suggesting that Southampton are looking to sign Manchester City right back Curtis Obeng.

The former England youth prospect is apparently keen for the move to go through, with the Saints’ ready to offer the 20-year-old his first real taste of first-team football.

Saints are currently without a recognised right back, with holding midfielder Lloyd James having played the majority of the season as a makeshift defender.

Although Obeng lacks experience, something that Saints are desperately short of, it is good to hear that Head Coach Mark Wotte is looking to strengthen his side, with a right back and a striker rumoured to be his top priorities.

  • Straight swap with Wotte? You don’t know what Saints’ fans would give to have a manager of Hughes’ calibre!

  • Would love to see this happen. James at right back just doesn’t work…no offence to the lad but he just isn’t a right back!!! We need a genuine right back and hopefully Obeng can help us at St. Mary’s!

  • Yep, we’re in desperate need of a right back. Hard to comment on Obeng though as I’ve never seen him play, but the fact that we’re looking to strengthen in that position is a good thing in my opinion. Will have to wait and see if anything more happens with this one . . .

  • Yeah, I haven’t seem him play either. BUT, it wouldn’t hurt to get a replacement for James. We need a player who is an established right back, otherwise left wingers will continue to punish the vulnerable James.
