Southampton contacted Celtic with an offer which the ‘Hoops’ accepted before they then gave consent for the player to talk to the Saints.
A stumbling block quickly became apparent with the players’ agents demanding a very large additional sum which was for the agents pockets.
Saints refused point blank and this brought out some poor responses from the player’s agents.
Agent Ivan Modia has claimed Wanyama is not in talks with Saints and told Sky Sports: ‘The player will not be forced into a corner to accept the Southampton deal, just because it is good for Celtic.’
Both Celtic and Southampton have behaved honorably and it seems from where I am sitting that the agents have decided to make a killing from any negotiations made with their client.
Considering that they are supposedly looking after their clients interests I am sometimes baffled by the strokes that some agents pull.
In response to the agents drivel Neil Lennon has defended Celtic’s handling of the Victor Wanyama transfer negotiations. He said, ‘I’m unhappy because we have dealt with things as professionally as possible.
‘What we have done is accepted a bid from Southampton, who are a very good club, a very progressive club. Personally, I think it would be a very good move for Victor in terms of his career going forward but there seems to be other bodies who want to block the deal.’
‘There has been a lot of talk in the last couple of days. We accepted a bid from Southampton and we’ve done nothing wrong in our eyes as always. The ball is firmly in the court of Victor’s representatives.’
‘You don’t know what’s around the corner. I would imagine there would be other interested parties but we’ve had no confirmation from any other clubs yet.’
It is clear that Celtic are not impressed by the goings on and we can take it as read that Saints are not best pleased either. Maybe our stance will help some clubs as they try to stem the flow of money that heads to agents rather than players or selling clubs.
