Saints Reportedly Turn Attentions To Young Brentford Talents

|

On Sunday the January transfer rumour mill had Southampton linked with talented Brentford duo Chris Mepham and Ollie Watkins as new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to strengthen the group.

With departures expected from St Mary’s Stadium this month, whilst Hasenhuttl has spoken about giving the whole group a chance to impress and improve under his charge, he certainly hasn’t ruled out dipping into the transfer market if the right player appears and Sky Sports have claimed that in recent weeks we have been scouting Mepham and Watkins and we are now weighing up our options when it comes to registering a formal interest.

21-year-old Mepham is a centre-half who has come through their youth system and is closing in on 50 career starts for the Championship side. 23-year-old Watkins, a striker, had an almost one goal in two games record at Exeter City as he came through their ranks, and stepping up to the Championship level, he’s got an almost one goal in three games ratio.

Both are incredibly highly-rated given their progress in recent seasons and with Southampton seemingly turning back to a youth focus under Hasenhuttl, they are certainly good shouts in my mind.

Whether anything comes of our reported interest, plenty of fans will be pleased that we are again beginning to look to the future after expensive failures in the transfer market.
