Saints v Chelsea Cup Matchday

Chelsea will have been stung by their defeat in midweek to bottom side Queens Park Rangers. The current Cup holders will be expected to come out with all guns blazing, and could have Demba Ba playing his first game for the Blues.

I think it is safe to say that the Blues will be hot favorites to win this tie and to progress to the next round. Hopefully the striker will take a game or two to find his feet at his new club.

So what chance have the Saints of delivering New Year joy to the fans? According to the statistics quite a good one. Saints v Chelsea over the years in the FA Cup makes interesting reading statistically. Chelsea have never beaten Saints in the FA Cup.

1922/3 saw Saints draw away 0-0 before winning 1-0 at home.

1923/4 saw a repeat with us 1-1 drawing away before winning 2-0.

1976/7 saw us again need a draw before winning. Drawing 1-1 at home then winning 3-0 away.

1980/1 saw Saints win 3-1 at home.

The League cup tells a different story, but what exactly has all this got to do with today? Zilch! Absolutely nothing, Chelsea fans will say that it is time to break our winning run they will point to their strengths and say that they are a much better side than us and rightly so.

However this is not the league but the FA Cup and many a surprise has been sprung during it’s history.

Can we beat Chelsea? Yes we can, but having the chance to be able to is not the same as actually doing it.

Referee: Mike Dean
Assistants: John Flynn and John Brooks
4th official: Graham Scott

I am looking forward to this game and hope that above all else we see a good clean game with no injuries to players, and refereeing mistakes.

Bring it on.
