Season-changing results can’t allow Saints’ heads to drop heading into must-win game – Opinion

|

It has been a season-changing seven days for Southampton and a period of the campaign that has seen the club’s fortunes change for the better.

Two wins on the bounce against Watford and Norwich City have seen the Saints climb out of the relegation zone for the first time in over a month, and the mood surrounding St. Mary’s has never been greater this season with Southampton supporters in great spirits after an incredible few weeks.

Seven points from their past three games have seen Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side change the course of their season for the better, but as is many things in life, the hard work is far from done just yet.

Will Hasenhuttl go big on January signings?

Yes

No

The Saints make the trek up north today to face a Newcastle United side that have exceeded all expectations so far this season, with Steve Bruce remarkably guiding the side to 11th in the league and sitting on level points with the likes of Arsenal and Sheffield United as the Premier League table shows after 15 games.

Indeed, the Magpies have been somewhat incredible this season, recently drawing at home to Manchester City and claiming a 2-0 win against Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United side, and this recent run of impressive form could pose a problem for Southampton.

Indeed, the Saints have been impressive claiming back-to-backs wins in the past week, but Southampton are not out of the woods yet when it comes to completely escaping the drop zone with a point still separating Hasenhuttl’s side with 18th place.

Southampton will have to be one their A-game today if they are to make it three wins from three, with a win potentially taking the Saints to as high as 14th in the Premier League table should results elsewhere go their way, but after two recent victories, the ambition will be there to extend that winning run from Hasenhuttl’s side.
