A short time ago this afternoon Southampton confirmed the speculation surrounding Dusan Tadic’s rumoured move back to the Dutch Eredivisie and his transfer to Ajax has now been confirmed.

The club say the transfer has gone through for an undisclosed fee but it is rumoured in the press to be in the region of £18million which isn’t a bad return on the 29-year-old international following his four years with us after joining from FC Twente.

His time at St Mary’s Stadium saw him make 162 appearances in our shirt and he scored 23 goals, helping us to three top-eight finishes in the Premier League, as well as showing improvement under manager Mark Hughes as we successfully avoided relegation back to the Championship last season.

Reaction amongst the fanbase was mixed, but most wished him well for the future.

Whatever anmyone’s thought’s on Tadic’s consistency, the major announcement from Staplewood today was goalkeeper Alex McCarthy signing a new contract extension with us amid speculation linking him with Liverpool and others following the way he stepped into the breach in 2017/18.

The 28-year-old Fans’ Player and Players’ Player of the Year last season has signed a new four-year deal keeping him with us until the summer of 2022.

In 18 Premier League appearances last season he more than played his part in helping us to avoid the drop as he kept seven clean sheets and pulled off some wonderful saves along the way.

Speaking to saintsfc the former Crystal Palace stopper said of his new deal.

“I’m massively pleased. I had one year left on my current deal and obviously I’m over the moon to sign a new four-year deal. I think the club is going in the right direction. With the way we finished the season, we can take that into this one and hopefully finish a lot higher up the table. Everyone is ready to go.”

Hughes added.

“Alex played a key role for us last season, and we are delighted he has agreed a new deal here. His performances last season speak for themselves, and it is clear how highly regarded he is by his teammates and also the supporters. It was clearly a priority this summer to ensure the commitment between him and the club was strengthened, and we believe Alex is very much in the right place to continue to grow and improve his game.”
