Southampton have given Ryan Smith a six month contract following a successful loan spell.

Smith came to St. Mary’s in October from League 1 outfit Millwall and Saints boss saw enough promise in the winger to make his move a permanent one.

The 22 year old has made five appearances for the Saints, offering another option on the wing for Jan Poortvliet. Smith’s time on the south coast hasn’t been perfect, having spent time on the injury table. A hamstring injury and a dislocated shoulder have hinded the youngster.

Nonetheless, the ex-Arsenal trainee decalred his excitement about signing for the Saints: ‘I’m really pleased to have made the move. Southampton is a big club and are not really a Championship outfit, when you look at it in terms of the stadium and the training facilities.’

The Islington born player can’t wait to prove himself to the Saints faithfull: ‘I’ve enjoyed my time here so far,’ he said, ‘although I haven’t played as much as I would have liked to due to injury. Now I’m totally fit to play again and I’m hoping to play as many games as I can.’
