After a hard-fought victory over Bournemouth at St Mary’s, Southampton head to Everton for their next match. The victory against the Cherries will have boosted our hopes of another escape from relegation. However, that said we have a very poor record against Everton when playing them in their Goodison Park Stadium.
The record for games played between the two teams in the old Division One, Premiership and Premier League shows a clear statistic of home dominance. Everton have won 28 times with some very high scoring games included in the history.
Eight times Everton have scored four or more goals in a match against us. The worst ever mauling given to us by the Toffees was on November 20th, 1971. Joe Royle scoring four in Everton’s 8-0 win.
For Saints, victory at Goodison is a rarity. We have won 1-0 three times, once 2-0, and once 3-0. Looking at the statistics it would appear that Southampton have always had to scrap hard for any successes at Goodison. Whereas Everton have had many extremely comfortable successes against us.
So as ready as we may feel we are for the game at Goodison this week we know that it will be a very hard ask for us to win. Our team must be prepared for a 90-minute scrap against an Everton side being cheered on by a vociferous fan base.
In our present situation with points being so urgently needed I feel that our team will be more than willing to try and withstand the pressure that they will face at Goodison Park and then hit Sam Allardyce’s side on the counter. With fans being less than impressed with Allardyce’s style of play, if we can frustrate them and get the grumbles going in the stands it could play in our favour.
Although the statistics suggest otherwise, I back Saints to earn at least a point on Saturday to keep our hopes of survival alive.
