Although the agreement was sanctioned by the majority of the football league clubs Nicola feels that too much muscle was used to push it through.

Cortese has now sent a letter to Greg Clarke, the former Leicester City chairman and the chairman of the other 71 league clubs giving the reasons for his fears.

According to our favourite paper, the Echo, he has stated that the way the new financial package from the Premier League has been worked out could lead to problems in the near future for lower league clubs.

The new agreement has meant that the parachute payments to clubs relegated from the Premier League has doubled. Now the clubs will receive £48m spread over 4 years.

To help push this through they offered the rest of the Championship clubs £2.2m each annually.

In his letter to the other chairmen and Greg Clarke Cortese is reported as saying, ‘You applied a threatening note. Under such threats and financially difficult circumstances you managed to get the majority you needed.’

It was reported that the behaviour shown was nort that of a loyal Football League member but as a servant to the Premier League.

The Football League is said to have replied by saying the majority voted for the agreement and this reflected their view.

Myself I think Nicola has a perfectly valid argument but he is battling against the odds.

How accurate this report is and how well it says what he has written we will have to wait and see.
