Aston Villa could sign Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to The Express and Star.

They claim Dean Smith is on the look-out for a new shot-stopper and the Saints man has emerged as a serious target.

Sky Sports had reported that Ralph Hasenhuttl is willing to listen to offers for McCarthy and Fraser Forster.

Both keepers found themselves out of the team on a regular basis after Hasenhuttl was appointed as manager, with the Austrian preferring Angus Gunn as his number one between the sticks.

Once the manager can shift one or both of his reserve keepers, he may finally be able to bring in Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Last month Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà (via Football Italia) claimed the deal taking the player from Fiorentina to St Mary’s was almost complete.

However, no transfer has been finalised. With three senior goalkeepers on the books at Southampton, it may have to be that one leaves before the deal for Dragowski can be confirmed.

The former Poland U21 keeper is valued at £9million by Transfermarkt and although he has two years remaining on his contract, he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by.

He spent the last six months of last season on loan at Empoli.
