Wesley Hoedt will be given a second chance to prove himself at Southampton, according to The Daily Echo.

They claim the 25-year-old defender will be given time to impress Ralph Hasenhuttl after spending a stint away from the club last season.

The Dutchman spent the second half of the last campaign on loan at Spanish outfit Celta Vigo. His spell wasn’t covered in glory, he was sent off on his debut and only made a further nine appearances.

Despite being bombed out by Hasenuttl, the Daily Echo claim the Austrian wants to find out if Hoedt has improved during his time away from St Mary’s.

They go on to suggest the £10.8million rated centre-back was included in the pre-season training squad to allow the manager a closer look.

The defender cost Saints £14.4million in 2017 and although he has three years remaining on his contract he is a player the club would like to move on, according to the report.

They also believe the Saints manager wants to bring in a new central defender, although he may have to ship one or two out first.

However, Southampton fansite @SaintsfcViews has accused the club of feeding The Daily Echo information in an attempt to ‘drum up’ interest in the defender.
